Summer Workouts in Pittsburgh

by admin on April 26, 2009

So the sunshine has arrived to the Burgh!!  It is time to break out the shorts and and tank tops. The true test of the impact of the winter has had on bodies.  If the thoughts of shorts and tanktops has you looking up Alaskan Cruises….STOP.  The great thing about the summer months is that there are opportunities at for fitness all around you….LITERALLY!!  What do I mean?!?!

Think back to child hood….we never needed a treadmill, weight, or crazy contraptions to get exercise.  For example, if you are a walker, next time you go out for a walk find some stairs on your walk.  You don’t need a lot of stairs(8-10) work great.  Do stair hops, start with two feet and jump with soft knees(bent), don’t let your hips come forward, and complete all steps, then repeat 3-4 times.  This will get your heart rate up and burn calories.

Another idea, same steps-do push-ups.  Start with the hands hip to shoulder, shoulders over elbows over wrists, inhale chest to steps, and exhale lift. Start at bottom step, and go up.  The first one is the worst one-they easier as you go up.  Do this 3-4 times.

Add a few a yoga poses or pilates to your cool down-stretch and tone abs!!!

Take your walks- to a higher instensity adding strength training which burns more calories.  More results for your time!!

Definition of Stupid

The Definition of Stupidity

Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.  I am sure we have seen this at the gym.  Day  in and day out doingthe same thing at the gym with the same results.  40 minutes of cardio, light weights with high repetition, and lots of abs. This is WRONG!!

What would I Change?

The best thing women can do is lift weigths-go heavy!!  Do not worry about bulking up!  It is physically impossible!!  Take your cardio down to 20 minutes.  Do some intervals or circuits!!  Try putting three exercises together.  For example, Medicine Ball Throws with Push Up, 1 minute on Bike, and kettlebell swing.  In those three moves you have hit your whole body….including abs in cardio.  Go through that 3-4 times and your heart rate will be higher than any 40 minute cardio session.  The calorie count will be much higher, too!!  I would pair that up with 2 other 3 grouped exercises for an AWESOME cardio and strength work out!!

How Often

Do this 2-3 time per week!!  On your off days do some yoga, pilates, bike, walk, etc for a great recovery workout!!

1440 minutes in a day-take 30 to exercise

by admin on April 8, 2009

There are 1440 minutes per day-that is a lot of minutes right?  I can’t count how many times I hear I don’t have time to work out.  Time is the most wasted resource!!  All the time we waste surfing the web, checking email or facebook could be used for getting your workout!!  I hear I don’t have an hour or so to work out.  Here is what I say:  If you have 30 minutes you have enough time to work out!!  30 minutes is 30 less emails, 1 gossip session around the water cooler, or a session of the facebook or myspace.  You will still have 1410 minutes to do whatever!!  30 minutes of Yoga, Pilates, Strength Training, Boot Camp, Kickboxing, etc

Fitness Parties in Pittsburgh

by admin on April 6, 2009

So this is my first official blog post.  I am kind of excited and nervous:)  I have been thinking about having fitness parties for a long time.  My friends and I always do girls night which I LOVE.  We do a lot of different things-eat, shop, coffee, bookstore, make-overs-you name it we have done it.  A main concept of our get togethers are the norms-boyfriend bashing, getting old, getting in shape, babies, etc.  It is always ironic that girls night usually focused around some sort of food-Sushi,P.F. Changs, Japanese Steak House, etc  You name it,we have ate it.  Why is it ironic?!?  I will tell you!  We talk about we don’t have enought time to work out, but we spend hours eating dinner that is high calories, full of fat, and drinking way too much wine.  I know I know ….that is the best part of girls night.  Well wouldn’t be great to have a girls night fitness party instead. Instead of cosumer an extra 500 calories burn them.  I am really excited about this!!  I love girls night!!  What better way to spend a night in Pittsburgh.  Doing Yoga, Pilates, Boot Camp, or Group Personal Training.  Maybe some smoothies after?!?! Who I am kidding…wine for sure!
